The International Zoo Veterinary Group (IZVG) is now the largest full time freelance zoological veterinary practice in the world. Founded in 1976, by the association of two practices involved in zoo animal medicine. Since then, the founding partners, David Taylor and Martin Dinnes have both retired, but the practice has gone from strength to strength. Based in the UK, IZVG works in the UK, Europe, Africa, the Middle and Far East.
The group work with zoos, parks and aquaria around the world, treating wild, rare and endangered species. The practice partners are veterinary surgeons John Lewis, Sue Thornton and Steve Philp. IZVG also employs two full-time veterinary pathologists, Drs. Mark Stidworthy and Daniela Denk; and 3 veterinary assistants, Tania Monreal Pawlowsky, Karen Archer and Richard Harvey . John Lewis is recognised as a Specialist in Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, veterinary pathologists Mark Stidworthy and Daniela Denk are recognised as Specialists in Veterinary Pathology (Zoo and Wildlife) and Karen Archer is recognised as an Advanced Practitioner in Zoo Medicine by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. John Lewis, Sue Thornton, Steve Philp and Karen Archer are UK government-appointed Zoo Inspectors.
In recent years, we have become increasingly involved in providing veterinary support for conservation projects around the world, including Nigeria, Cameroon, Paraguay, Mauritius, the Seychelles, Russia, Indonesia and the Caribbean Islands. Our work is closely linked with conservation charity Wildlife Vets International. John Lewis and Andrew Greenwood have all worked on valuable projects helping protect endangered species in the wild. Specialist veterinary knowledge is vital to these projects, which we are perfectly placed to provide.
